Description
The Veterinary Thoracoscopic Surgery Course, organized by the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Center (CCMIJU), is designed as highly specialized training for clinical veterinarians and veterinary surgeons who wish to deepen their expertise in thoracoscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for thoracic pathology. The course provides a comprehensive approach to minimally invasive thoracic surgery, combining solid theoretical foundations with extensive practical training aimed at the progressive acquisition of technical skills in a highly specialized learning environment.
Throughout the sessions, participants receive instruction on the fundamental principles of thoracoscopic surgery, handling of instruments and specialized equipment, surgical planning, and clinical decision-making in complex thoracic procedures. The practical program is conducted using ex vivo simulators and experimental models, allowing participants to practice laparoscopic dissection and suturing, pulmonary and pleural biopsies, dissection of intercostal vessels, identification and dissection of the thoracic duct, as well as more advanced procedures such as pulmonary segmentectomy and lobectomy, mediastinal lymph node biopsy, and pericardiectomy.
The course also includes demonstrations of advanced techniques, such as thoracic duct identification using indocyanine green (ICG) and thoracotomy, allowing attendees to explore alternative surgical approaches and compare minimally invasive techniques with open procedures. Clinical sessions complement the practical training, promoting analysis of real cases, discussion of indications and complications, and exchange of experiences between participants and faculty.
This training activity represents a unique opportunity for professional development, aimed at enhancing technical competencies in veterinary thoracic surgery, within an excellence-driven learning environment like CCMIJU, characterized by advanced technology, close supervision by faculty, and a highly practical approach that facilitates direct transfer to daily clinical practice.
