Course on Basic Endoluminal and Interventional Radiology Techniques in Veterinary Medicine

This course offers a direct introduction to the fundamental procedures of endovascular intervention. The program combines a theoretical foundation in interventional radiology and vascular anatomy with extensive operating room–based practical training, during which participants apply techniques such as the Seldinger method, selective angiography of major vessels, and endotracheal stent placement. Specific clinical procedures are also addressed, including treatment of patent ductus arteriosus using vascular plugs, management of portosystemic shunts with stent-coil techniques, tumor embolization, and pulmonary valvuloplasty. ductus arterioso persistente mediante Vascular-Plug, el manejo del shunt portosistémico con stent-coil, la embolización tumoral y la valvuloplastia pulmonar.

Description

The XXIV Practical Course on Introduction to Endoluminal Techniques and Interventional Radiology in Veterinary Medicine provides comprehensive training aimed at understanding and performing the main endovascular procedures used in veterinary clinical practice. The program combines key theoretical sessions—including an introduction to interventional radiology and a review of canine and feline vascular anatomy—with an extensive block of operating room–based practical training designed to consolidate technical fundamentals.

During the practical sessions, participants work progressively on essential endoluminal access techniques, beginning with the Seldinger technique and the performance of selective angiography in structures such as the left ventricle, aorta, celiac artery, hepatic artery, splenic artery, iliac and mesenteric arteries, carotid artery, as well as major venous vessels such as the caudal vena cava. These practical exercises allow participants to become familiar with device handling, intravascular navigation, and fluoroscopic interpretation.

The course also addresses advanced clinical procedures of high diagnostic and therapeutic value. These include treatment of patent ductus arteriosus using vascular plug–type devices, correction of portosystemic shunts using stent-coil techniques, targeted tumor embolization, and pulmonary valvuloplasty. In addition, endotracheal stent placement is performed, covering indications, planning, and implantation technique.

Thanks to this predominantly hands-on approach, participants gain a comprehensive overview of the applications of interventional radiology in veterinary medicine, developing technical skills, decision-making criteria, and competencies that enable them to understand the therapeutic potential of endoluminal techniques in real clinical cases.
